It’s going to be live, it’s going to be hardcore and hopefully it’s going to be enough to get Attention Thieves to the finals.

The Red Stripe awards are back next week and six bands are being pitted against each other to be in with a chance of winning up to £30,000 worth of investment.

The Wokingham band is gearing up to take part in the awards presented by 100% Music at The Purple Turtle in Reading on Friday, March 12.

“The best thing to do for shows like this is to practise your a*** off,” says vocalist Alex Green. “We’ve played shows already and we’re playing to always improve ourselves.

“It’s not the sort of thing we usually do, but we were approached to enter so we thought ‘why not?’”

Other Berkshire bands taking part are Johnny Arrow and The Cheap Day Return, Clockwork, Ravens In Paris, Sevasa and Young Lust. Each will get the chance to play a 25-minute set.

Attention Thieves are made up of 22-year-old Alex on vocals, Simon Chambers, also 22, on drums, bass guitarist Ryan Davies, 24, and guitarist James Harris, 23.

They got together at secondary school – James and Simon even went to primary school together.

Alex says the band’s emphasis is firmly on the live aspect.

“People should try to make it down for a show and they should keep an eye on the new stuff.

“We’re different to all the other bands out there and if people really want a hard rock band who gives it their all, they’ve got then come down.”

Alex also has some stern advice for gig-goers out there.

“Stay at home if you’re a wet rag, but if you want hardcore rock – not just standing around – and you want to enjoy the music, come to a gig.

Alex also thinks that the music market is saturated with female singers – quite a statement to make considering they will be performing at the album launch for local band Amy’s Ghost in April.

His sentiment is in the fact that Attention Thieves don’t want to be lumped in with all the other rock bands in the country.

“At the Red Stripe awards we’ll play about five or six tracks and hit it hard with a heavy set.

It would be good not to go out on the first round and if all goes to plan we could get through.”

The band released the EP Fear to Lose six months ago but Alex admits the new songs already have a different feel about them.

“It lacked edge and didn’t come across how we sound as a band.

“It’s always good to see a band if they sound like their CD. It’s the difference between an average band and a great band, we’re not there yet, but that’s our aim.

“We’re not going to rush it – we want to get the right sound. We think we can get something energetic and lively.

“What people can expect is raw, edgy, punk but in keeping with commercial rock. The EP was a stepping stone.

“We know what we want now – and we’re producing it.”

For their next release, Attention Thieves have managed to bag themselves some studio time with local music producer Adam Whittaker.

“We’ve layered the drums down for three tracks and now it’s about the guitars and vocals, getting them right for the three,” Alex says. “It’s just a waiting game really.

“We are working on new material but we don’t have a time limit on it.”

And while taking part in the Red Stripe Awards will be great for the winning band, Alex says it’s not the most important thing in the world.

“It will be a good night, it’ll be a laugh. We won’t enjoy it if we get knocked out though,” he laughs. “The prize is great publicity but maybe we will play festivals without winning it. I’m not saying we don’t want to win; there would be no point taking part if we didn’t think we could win.”

The winning band will go through to the finals of the contest in London on Thursday, April 29.

Those who triumph will win at least three festival slots around the UK, Fender equipment, a gig at The HMV Forum, Merc clothing, support from Arising Artist and £15,000 worth of advertising on Last FM.

And the band is certainly going to give it their all on the night. In fact guitarist James says just to take part is frankly “spiffing”.

“I think we believe in ourselves and our music,” says Alex. “We are just going out there to do our songs and do our best – hopefully there is something there to push us to win.

“Good luck to the other bands but I hope they lose,” he laughs.

The Red Stripe Awards take place from 7.30pm on Friday, March 12, at The Purple Turtle, Gun Street, Reading. Admission is free.

Tickets £14

Support TBC

The band with roots in Big Audio Dynamite have had a 6 album career which has spanned the credibility of a Creation Records release, major moves on Virgin and independent support on Functional and Rufflife. Cited by John Peel as having recorded one of his 10 favourite albums of all time, the top 20 hit from that album ‘Little Britain’ has since acquired classic status. Dreadzone was formed by Greg Dread, writer, producer, DJ, drummer, programmer and sample addict back in 1992 along with fellow founder Tim Bran. After extensive touring and making the first four albums as a member of the original Big Audio Dynamite in the eighties Greg left to form Screaming Target with Don Letts and Leo Williams before finding his spiritual home in the House of Dread. As the mainstay Greg steered Dreadzone through calm and troubled waters throughout their 17 year history through different line ups including constant members Leo Williams (ex BAD), Earl 16 and MC Spee, always trusting in the power of the music to keep the dread fire burning. Others to pass through the ranks were Dan Donovan, Dave Harrow, Donna McKevitt, Rob Marche, Ben Balafonic and the late Steve Roberts, who sadly passed away in 2006.

Tickets available from the following Links
https://www.wegottickets.com/event/67136

http://www.seetickets.com/see/price.asp?code=446188&userid={99E24420-B807-48FF-B86C-A97197DCC003}&filler1=see&filler2=art-srch
